Why did the Spanish explore and colonize New Mexico and Florida in the 1600s?

At that time period in Europe there was a very big push for expansion and colonization. It was for the purposes of power and money, many of the large European powers were trying to become the most powerful empire. The Spanish used New Mexico and Florida as a way to gain power through land, resources and the expansion of their empire.
