A vowel with a breve () over it or no mark at all is a short vowel.

A short vowel word consists on any word that doesn't allow the vowel within it to produce that vowel's long vowel sound.

Words with only three letters typically make the short vowel sound due to the fact that the three letters usually don't allow for a second vowel to force the long vowel sound out.
